A home renovation is always a wild (but fun) ride. In this Washington DC home renovation, we took an out-of-the-wall approach—literally.
We relocated the kitchen, family, and dining room, reconfiguring layouts to better suit each space. We also worked our magic by repurposing an empty area to create a secret hideaway for the kids.
Here’s how it all came together:
We gave the kitchen the glory it deserved.
Ready to turn your kitchen from a sardine can into a gourmet paradise? Bid farewell to elbow wars and welcome a new era of breakfast bliss and chatty cooking sessions. Remember, where there's food, there's fun - and your kitchen is about to become the life of the party!
For this kitchen remodel we took a bold step and relocated the original kitchen entirely, moving it to where the dining room used to be. By expanding its footprint and adding a sleek island, we transformed it into a bright, airy space. Walls came down, creating a seamless flow that connects the kitchen with the rest of the house.
The deep green island painted in Sherwin-Williams Forestwood grounds the center of the new kitchen. Embracing a hint of Mediterranean flair, we jazzed it up with kitchen with glossy St Tropez Verde Wall tiles. Fun, right?

Architect, Kieran Fanning, mentions some of the difficulties faced while designing this kitchen layout. "One major challenge for us was moving the kitchen to a new location in the house that better suited the flow the client wanted. The area where the kitchen was moved to had a large beam above a portion of cabinets, which initially would have required an odd shaped bulkhead. We decided to modify the bulkhead to conceal the beam, and extended it over all the cabinets to create a raised ceiling detail. In the end, it created a more dramatic space and accentuated the island as a focal point."
We relocated and gave the dining room a jade upgrade.
Have your guests seeing green (or jade) with these breathtaking walls. Our team chose Phillip Jeffries Floored Wallpaper in Jade 8480 to achieve a serene yet striking ambiance for the new dining room. After all, why not have a dining room that is both cozy and dramatic?
By widening the connection to the adjoining family room, we created a flow that’s both seamless and distinct, allowing for a clear yet inviting transition between spaces.

We added a luxurious primary bathroom to the second floor.
A home renovation isn't complete without a luxury bathroom remodel. That’s why we went all out and created a primary bathroom that’s basically a five-star spa retreat. We maximized the space we had with an open-concept shower and a window that now floods the room with sunlight.

We gave the kids a space to let their imagination go wild.
Turning ordinary spaces into magical worlds is all part of the fun! Tapping into our inner kids we saw potential in the eaves of the kids' bedrooms and transformed it into a secret hideaway. Now they can create their own little worlds in the safety of home.
Plus the secret passageway doubles as extra shelving space, bringing a little more order into mom's world too.

The exterior of the house now has that old soul, with new style.
The goal for this home addition? Adding a refresh to the house while maintaining its look and charm. An interesting challenge for our architect. "We wanted the house to keep its original charm from the street." The solution? Adding about 500 square feet to the rear of the house. "This also allowed us to take advantage of the natural light in the backyard," Kieran adds.
Along with adding square footage to the home, our team gave the entire exterior a fresh new look, all while being sympathetic to the bungalow style of the house. The new windows, rooflines, and materials used remained consistent with the homeowner's style.
